Madder (rubia tinctorium) is the root of a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the coffee family. It can grow in temperate climates, such as Canada, and gives strong clear shades of orange and red. The colour will change depending on the hardness/softness (calcium content) of your water. Purple shades can be achieved with an iron mordant.
Use at 12-35% wof. Don't boil, as it will bring out the brown.
Madder is not a substantive dye and requires the use of a mordant. Read more about mordants in our , and shop for them .
